Books For Syria - Donate to cheer a child
Dear Friends
The village of Atmeh in Northern Syria has become a temporary base for tens of thousands of civilians who have fled the destruction of their homes, but are not allowed safe passage to Turkish refugee camps. Most have fled with just the clothes on their backs. It is a far cry from what any of us would consider a safe or adequate ‘home’, with donated tents providing scant protection from the cold and rain, extraordinarily basic and inadequate sanitation, the provision of food and basic medical care reliant on the work of a few small charities. Thousands of very young children are growing up in this hostile environment, also having to deal with the loss of parents and siblings. The long-term psychological, intellectual and educational impacts will be profound.
In the shorter term, in fact immediately, we want to provide these children with a rare and valuable dose of intellectual stimulation and comfort, and arouse their imagination, through literature. The hard work has already been done, we just need to raise a little cash.
‘Far From Home’ is a children’s book in arabic and english about hope and optimism, written and illustrated by Samah Zaitoun specifically for Syrian refugee children under the auspices of the Books For Syria project. This project is part of the intellectual rebuilding effort through imagination, creativity and exploration. Education, Empowerment and Therapy are the desired social impact. I think its a wonderful little book that will make a real difference to some very distressed, traumatised and confused children.

***MASSACRE/GRAPHIC*** WHEN YOU THINK YOU HAVE SEEN THE WORST, YOU REALLY HAVE’NT. Hama (Helfaya): Dec 16, 2012 - This is as terrible a video as you can witness. This video is symbolizes all the horrors that the people of Syria face every day. It’s hard to watch, but then again, all injustices are unless you do something about it.
The video starts as many similar ones do. The cameraman rushes to the scene of a shell strike that happened only moments earlier. The shell fired by Assad’s forces hits the home of a family. The shell managed to impact an area that consists of the entrance and the basement where people were seeking refuge from the bombing. In Assad’s Syria, there is no where to hide.
We see locals dragging the body of man to a waiting van that acts more like a hearse than an ambulance. We hear the wails of a man screaming, mourning in loss. He sits over the body of his brother and screams “Oh Brother! Oh Brother! Oh Brother …” over and over again. He’s become delusional at the horrific site of his brother torn to shreds in-front of him.
As the man approaches the van, we see that it is full of bodies and body parts, we later learn that all are part of the same family. The morbid site is too much for the cameraman to bear and he breaks down crying. He can’t help it.
He finally moves from the van back towards the man who is still wailing over his brother. They finally move him away and cover the body, it’s too much to bear.
He heads back towards the building where we can see another dead man in the entrance, then all over the rest of the building and down the stairs we do not see bodies anymore … we only see blood and lumps of flesh.
This is Syria. This is what Assad is doing and has been doing to the people for close to two years because the people rose up and demanded their freedom.
